in Fryday & Coppins, Lichenologist, 36: 91, 2004. Basionym: Verrucaria muscicola var. octospora Nyl. in Ohlert - Lich. Prov. Preussen: 43, 1870.
Synonyms: Chromatochlamys muscorum var. octospora (Nyl.) H. Mayrhofer & Poelt
Distribution: N - Piem (TSB 34009).
Description: Thallus crustose, whitish to pale brown, thin, more or less continuous and membrane-like. Perithecia black, half immersed, covered by the pale thallus in lower part, globose to broadly pyriform, not flattened, 0.3-0.6 mm across. Exciple 50-70 µm thick, dark brown in upper part, paler on lower part; periphysoids present near the ostiole, conglutinated; paraphysoids persistent, thin, branched and anastomosing, not apically thickened, free. Asci 6-8-spored, cylindrical, fissitunicate, thick-walled, the inner wall thinner than the outer one, the apex with an internal beak, K/I-. Ascospores muriform, with 11-14 transverse septa and 1-3 longitudinal septa, hyaline, becoming straw-coloured when old, elongate-ellipsoid to subcylindrical, 40-60 x 15-20 µm, the outer wall scarcely thicker than the septa. Photobiont chlorococcoid, the algal cells without a gelatinous sheath. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a mainly western lichen in Europe found on moribund mosses on rocks and soil, mostly in upland areas. The record from the Italian Alps is somehow surprising.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: bark, soil, terricolous mosses, and plant debris
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
