Distribution: C - Marc (Nimis & Tretiach 1999), Mol (Nimis & Tretiach 1999, Caporale & al. 2008).
Description: Thallus crustose, usually endosubstratic, rarely hemiendosubstratic, pale grey to grey-brown, often poorly evident. Perithecia half-immersed in rock, sometimes leaving shallow pits, forming 0.2-0.4(-0.5) mm across, hemispherical, sometimes apically flattened projections with the ostiole in a shallow depression. Involucrellum well-developed, adpressed to exciple and often reaching to base-level, the pigment dark reddish-brown, K+ dark grey-brown; exciple 155-280 μm across, pale in lower part; hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, ellipsoid to clavate, I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of a delicate rostrum. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, ellipsoid, (9-)10-12(-14) x (5-)6-8(-9) μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on inclined surfaces of compact calcareous rocks in upland areas; known from the Central Apennines and from scattered localities throughout the Alps, outside the Italian territory; to be looked for in the Italian Alps.
