Distribution: N - VA (Piervittori & Isocrono 1999), Emil (Fariselli & al. 2020). C - Tosc, Sar (Narui & al. 1996). S - Cal (Codogno 1995, Puntillo 1996, Hafellner 2021).

Description: Thallus foliose, umbilicate, attached by a central holdfast, rather thick and rigid, up to 10 cm in diam. Upper surface ochraceous grey to pale grey-brown, dull, finely rimose, the marginal parts and sometimes also the central parts with numerous, up to 1(-2) mm wide, darker brown schizidia which tend to fall off leaving scars exposing the medulla; lower surface ochraceous white to pale pinkish brown, usually distinctly areolate, with or without pale rhizinomorphs, without trabeculae near the central holdfast. Apothecia very rare and incompletely developed, black, gyrodisc. Asci 8-spored, elongate-clavate, thick-walled, the apical dome K/I+ blue, Umbilicaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 8-11 x 6-8 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex K-, C-, KC-, P-; medulla C+ and KC+ red. Chemistry: medulla with gyrophoric acid.

Note: on steeply inclined to rain-sheltered surfaces of siliceous rocks, ecologically intermediate between U. grisea and U. deusta, ranging from the Alps to the mountains of Calabria.
