Variospora schaereri (Flörke) Cl. Roux

Bull. Ass. Fr. Lichénologie, 47, 1: 30, 2022. Basionym: Lecidea schaereri Flörke in Arnold - Flora, 64: 312, 1881.
Synonyms: Caloplaca schaereri (Flörke) Zahlbr.; Caloplaca velana var. schaereri (Flörke) Clauzade & Cl. Roux; Variospora velana (A. Massal.) Arup, Søchting & Frödén var. schaereri (Flörke)
Distribution: N - Lomb. C - Abr (Gheza & al. 2021). S - Pugl (Durini & Medagli 2004), Cal (Puntillo 1996), Si (Nimis & al. 1996b).
Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic or thinly episubstratic, mostly continuous, more rarely locally rimose, ochraceous yellow to yellow-orange, epruinose, starting the life-cycle on endolithic Pyrenodesmia-species, especially P. albopruinosa. Apothecia zeorine, 0.5-1 mm across, usually dispersed and not numerous, at first immersed in the thallus, then slightly projecting, with an orange disc and a paler margin. Epithecium orange, granular K+ red; hymenium colourless; paraphyses sparingly branched in upper part, the apical cells swollen, 4-5 μm wide; hypothecium colourless. hyaline, very variable, Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid, 11-15 x 6.5-9 μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 3-5 μm (1/4-1/2 of spore length). Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K+ red, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus and apothecia with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997).
Note: an apparently widespread and locally common species of a difficult and still poorly understood complex, usually starting the life-cycle on endolithic Pyrenodesmia-species, especially P. albopruinosa.
