Verh. zool.-bot. Ges. Wien, 61: 41, 1911. Basionym: Amphoridium crypticum Arnold - Flora, 68: 148, 1885, nom. inval.
Synonyms: Verrucaria delitescens Servít ?
Distribution: N - Frl, TAA (Nascimbene & al. 2022), Lig.
Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic, continuous, bluish grey, without a distinct prothallus. Perithecia black, globose or subglobose, (0.15-)0.3-0.4 mm across, (3/4-) to fully immersed in deep pits in the rock. Involucrellum absent; exciple 0.25-0.4 mm across, apically thicker, the wall c. 30 µm thick, brown-black throughout, K+ darker brown; hamathecium of branched-anastomosing periphyses and periphysoids measuring 50-70 x c. 2 µm, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid, (20-)25-30(-34) x 12-17(-18) μm, with a 1(-1.5) µm thick, persistent gelatinous perispore. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on compact calcareous rocks and dolomite near and above treeline, up to the nival belt; a very critical taxon, related to V. hochstetteri s.lat., which needs further study.
Growth form: Crustose endolithic
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
Poorly known taxon in need of further study
