Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, pale to dark brown, dull, well-developed, up to several cm wide, (0.3-)0.5-1.5 mm thick, at first of rounded areoles which soon coalesce into a cracked crust with large, sometimes lobulate 0.16-1.6 mm wide secondary areoles, the margins not sorediate. Cortex paraplectenchymatous, 20-30 µm thick, overlain by an epinecral layer; medulla white to patchily brownish, without a dark basal layer. Perithecia black, slightly to strongly projecting, the visible parts 0.3-0.52 mm wide, not covered by a thalline layer and not forming pits. Involucrellum well-developed, adpressed to exciple or slightly spreading, encircling c. the upper third, sometimes reaching to base-level; exciple broadly pyriform, 0.3-0.5 mm across, the wall colourless to dark brown; hamathecium of weakly branched and anastomosing periphyses and periphysoids measuring 35-50 x 3-4 μm, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 20-28 x (9.5-)10-14(-15) μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: an early coloniser of walls (mortar, brick, cement, limestone) in urban settlements, more rarely found on calcareous rocks in natural environments, with a wide ecological amplitude, from horizontal to steeply inclined faces visited by birds.
