Verrucaria ochrostoma (Leight.) Trevis.

Conspect. Verrucar.: 8, 1860. Basionym: Sagedia ochrostoma Borrer ex Leight. - Brit. Spec. Angioc. Lich.: 23, 1851.
Synonyms: Verrucaria cataleptoides var. ochrostoma (Leight.) Servít
Distribution: N - Ven, Lig.
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, 0.3-0.7(-1) mm thick, pale grey to grey-brown, areolate, without a distinct prothallus, the areoles 0.3-0.45 mm wide, more or less convex and mostly crowded, forming a secondarily cracked crust. Cortex paraplectenchymatous, with a dilute brown pigment, overlain by a distinct epinecral layer; algal layer without crystals; medulla paraplectenchymatous, without a black basal layer. Perithecia black, 1 per areole, laminal, completely immersed, only the concave brown apex visible. Involucrellum absent; exciple 0.2-0.4 mm across, the wall dark throughout; hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, pyriform to obovate, I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled to rarely 1-septate, hyaline, narrowly oblong-ellipsoid, 16-27 x 9-14 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: closely related to V. murorum, this poorly known species, characterised by the superficial thallus and immersed perithecia without an involucrellum (see Orange 2013), seems to prefer concrete walls and nutrient-enriched, dusty surfaces at relatively low elevations.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
