Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic, often visible as dirty white to grey flecks, when well-developed rimose-areolate. Perithecia black, 0.2-0.5 mm across, half-immersed, the projecting part mostly hemispherical. Involucrellum black, reaching down at least half of the perithecium and often to base-level, usually more or less adpressed to exciple; exciple brown to brown-black, K+ darker brown; hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid, 24-36 x 13-22 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on more or less calciferous rocks in rather humid situations; closely related to V. viridula, but a distinct species according to Roux & Coll. (2014).
