Description: Thallus crustose, hemiendosubstratic or thinly episubstratic, 0.1-0.3 mm thick, grey-brown, olive-brown, ochre-coloured to medium brown, more or less smooth, shiny, with a oily appearance, continuous, finely rimose (especially around the perithecia), or areolate, often delimited by a dark prothallus, especially from conspecific thalli, the areoles 0.2-0.3 mm wide. Cortex up to 30 μm thick; algal layer clearly delimited, up to 80 μm thick; medulla thin, white to brownish, with numerous crystals, without a black basal layer. Perithecia black, small and dense (260-400/cm²), 1-2 per areole, totally to ⅔ immersed in thallus, leaving no pits when they fall off, the apical part often flattened. Involucrellum adpressed to exciple, reaching down at least ⅓–⅔ of the perithecium (most often to base-level), unequally thick, laterally 30-60 μm thick, becoming progressively thinner or thicker (-80 μm) downwards; exciple 0.15-0.3 mm across, the wall brown to colourless, often paler in basal parts; hamathecium of mostly simple, (15-)20-30 μm long periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid, (12-)13-18(-21) x 5-7(-8) μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on hard, compact limestone in rather shaded, sheltered situations; much overlooked, probably more frequent in Italy. For a good description and further details see Breuss (2008b).
