Distribution: N - Lig (Navarro-Rosinés & al. 2007). C - Sar.
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, areolate, starting the life-cycle on the thalli of Variospora aurantia, later becoming autonomous. Areoles scattered or more often clustered, rounded to rarely polygonal, flat to slightly convex, 0.4-1.3 mm wide, 0.3-0.4 mm thick, pale grey to brownish grey, more rarely dark brown, usually epruinose, with blackish margins and lower part. Cortex (pseudocortex) pigmented in upper part, colourless in lower part, without or with a thin epinecral layer; medulla white, rather loose, with large crystals, I-. Perithecia (0.1-)0.2-0.25 μm across, fully immersed or slightly projecting, 1-3(-6) per areole. Involucrellum absent; exciple at first colourless, but soon turning dark brown in upper part, pale brown in lower part; hymenium colourless, I+ reddish; hamathecium of periphyses along the ostiolar channel, pseudoparaphyses in upper part of the perithecium, and paraphyses disappearing early. Asci 8-spored, clavate, fissitunicate and bitunicate, the wall not amyloid, not or only slightly thickened above, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled to 1-septate, hyaline, ellipsoid, (10-)11-14.5(-16.5) x (4.5-)6-7.5(-8.5) μm. Pycnidia black, immersed, with a colourless wall, Dermatocarpon-type. Conidia simple, hyaline, bacilliform, 4-6 x 1-1.5 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: an obligately lichenicolous species growing on Variospora aurantia, perhaps more widespread.
