Description: Thallus not evident, not lichenized. Apothecia stalked, black, 0.3-0.5 mm high, the stalk somewhat paler than capitulum, consisting of periclinally arranged hyphae, the capitulum strongly flattened. Exciple well-developed, of periclinally arranged, narrowly cylindrical, brown cells; epithecium thin, dark brown; mazaedium absent. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, with a strongly thickened apex, formed singly from hooked ascogenous hyphae, with uniseriately arranged ascospores, persisting until the ascospores are mature. Ascospores 1-celled, broadly to narrowly ellipsoid, brown, 12-15 x 5-6 µm, with a minute ornamentation. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: saprobic on Alnus alnobetula, certainly widespread throughout the Alps and locally very common, especially in the subalpine belt.
