Description: Thallus crustose, not lichenized, endosubstratic, usually poorly evident, causing a slight bleaching of the bark. Ascomata perithecioid, immersed into black, irregularly shaped pseudostromata with an overlying, black wall which is not continuous below the hamathecium. Hamathecium of branched, rarely anastomosing, non-amyloid pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, obclavate, tapering to apex, fissitunicate, with two functional wall layers, K/I-. Ascospores 1-3-septate with eusepta, hyaline or finally pale brown, constricted at middle septum, ellipsoid to ovoid, 7-9 x 3-4 µm, the wall not ornamented, the cells of unequal size. Pycnidia black, immersed. Conidia bacilliform, simple, colourless. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a mild-temperate fungus, most frequent on the smooth bark of Fraxinus ornus in the submediterranean belt.
