Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic or partly endosubstratic, rather thick, the surface folded-verrucose, grey-white, farinose. Pseudocortex of anticlinally oriented hyphae, algae arranged in columns; medulla with oil hyphae. Perithecia 0.5-0.7 mm across (in section), black, immersed into c. 1 mm wide, hemispherical, sometimes apically flattened thalline warts, the ostiolar region being the only one visible from above. Exciple thick, brown-black throughout, 0.5-0.7 mm across; hymenial gel I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of iodine), K/I+ blue; hymenial algae almost isodiametric, 3-4 μm wide; hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, after dehiscence with a delicate extruded endotunica, I-, K/I-. Ascospores muriform, colourless, turning yellowish brown at maturity, ellipsoid, 42-68 x 18-28 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid, present in both thallus and hymenium. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on occasionally submerged limestone rocks; all known records are from SW Europe, including the Western Alps (France); to be looked for in the Italian Alps.
