Description: Thallus crustose-subsquamulose, episubstratic, yellow to yellow-orange, consisting of small, 0.5-1.5(-4) mm wide, often sublobulate, flat to usually convex, sorediate areoles. Soralia yellow, marginal or laminal, often developing on the upraised margins of the areoles, with 0.04-0.08 mm wide soredia. Cortex paraplectenchymatous, 15-35 µm thick; medulla poorly developed, paraplectenchymatous. Apothecia rare, 0.3-0.7(-1) mm across, with an orange to orange-brown disc, a sorediate thalline margin concolorous with thallus and a thin, paler proper margin. Proper exciple of radiating hyphae; epithecium orange-brown, K+ red; hymenium colourless, 60-70 μm high; paraphyses branched, the apical cells swollen; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid, 15-18(-20) x 6-8(-10) μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 1.5-3 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K+ red, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: parietin, fallacinal, emodin, and teloschistin.
Note: an incompletely circumboreal species of bare, more or less calciferous mineral soil in steppe-like environments, reported also from the Alps, but outside the Italian territory; to be looked for especially in the xerothermic Alpine valleys.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: soil, terricolous mosses, and plant debris
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by soredia, or soredia-like structures (e.g. blastidia)
