Description: Thallus crustose, areolate, without cephalodia and pseudopodetia. Areoles scattered to contiguous, up to 0.5 mm wide, grey, swollen, with thick, raised margins and a darker central area (best visible in young areoles), sometimes sorediate, the finely granular soredia finally occupying the whole surface. Apothecia developing between the areoles, up to 1.5 mm across, with a black, convex disc and an indistinct proper margin. Paraphyses simple, slightly thickened above, with dark cap; hymenium colourless; hypothecium dark brown. Asci 8-spored, clavate to cylindrical, Porpidia-type. Ascospores (1-)3-septate, hyaline, fusiform with rounded ends, (18-)21-26(-30) x 5-8 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: medulla K+ yellow, C-, KC-, P+ faintly yellow; soralia K+ yellow, P+ orange, UV-. Chemistry: atranorin and stictic acid.
Note: on siliceous pebbles in humid situations; widespread in Central and Northern Europe but rare in the Alps, being known only from the Eastern Alps (Austria); to be looked for in the Italian Alps.
