Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, fully endosubstratic, up to 1 mm thick, appearing foveolate due to the pits left by decayed perithecia, pinkish or violaceous grey, turning green in the herbarium, sometimes delimited by a paler marginal zone. Cortical hyphae leptodermatous, c. 5 μm thick; medullary hyphae c. 3-4 μm thick, with more or less conspicuous lipidic vacuoles; innermost part of thallus with scattered, up to 20 μm wide macrosphaeroidal cells. Perithecia fully immersed in the rock, globose, 0.2-0.4 mm across, reddish brown, darker in upper half, with a punctiform ostiole surrounded by a paler region, tending to widen leaving an up to 3 mm wide crateriform pit. Exciple prosoplectenchymatous, of several rows of periclinally arranged hyphae, colourless or reddish brown, with heavier pigmentation in upper and outer parts; hymenium colourless, I+ blue, sometimes rapidly turning red, but always K/I+ blue; paraphyses mostly simple (2-)2.5(-4) μm thick, the apical cells 1-1.5 μm wide; periphyses septate, well-developed in the periostiolar region, up to c. 20 μm long; hypothecium colourless, c. 20 μm thick. Asci multispored, cylindrical, tapering towards the apex, the wall thin, 1+ light blue, without a tholus. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, ellipsoid (6-)7-11(-13) x (3-)4-5 μm, thin-walled, surrounded by a thin gelatinous perispore. Pycnidia rare, immersed, globose, pale brown, up to 0.1 mm across. Conidia hyaline, simple, ellipsoid to ovoid, with a slightly truncate base and rounded apex, 2-5-5 x 1-2 μm. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on shaded surfaces of calcareous rocks; described from the Iberian Peninsula, to be looked for in Italy.
