Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic, ochre-coloured, rimose to areolate, the surface granulose to minutely verrucose, usually forming large patches. Perithecia black, hemispherically projecting, up to 0.25 mm across. Involucrellum adpressed to exciple, reaching down for c. 1/3 of the perithecium; hamathecium of periphyses and slender, branched periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel I+ red, K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, K/I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum. Ascospores submuriform, with up to 6 transverse and up to 2, incomplete longitudinal septa, hyaline, ellipsoid, up to 25 x 15 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a silicicolous species resembling P. fuscoargillacea, but with a different ecology and with several morphological differences; only known from the type locality in the Italian Alps (Lombardy).
