Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, c. 0.2 mm thick, rimose-areolate, reddish brown to reddish grey, turning green when wet. Perithecia black, 0.2-0.3 mm across (in section), 1-2 per areole, half-immersed in the thallus, projecting with the flattened upper part. Involucrellum well-developed, often reaching the base of the perithecium; exciple almost colourless to pale brown; hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, K/I–, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum. Ascospores with highly variable septation (partly simple, partly with 2-5 transverse septa, and partly with an incomplete longitudinal septum), hyaline, ellipsoid, 22-32 x 10-16 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.

Note: on periodically inundated siliceous rocks in the European mountains, with a few records from the Eastern Alps (Austria); to be looked for in the Italian Alps. According to Savić & al. (2008), the species belongs to the Thelidium-clade, not to Polyblastia s.str.
