Protothelenella polytrichi Döbbeler & H. Mayrhofer

in Döbbeler, Arctic Alpine Mycology, 2: 92, 1987
Synonyms:
Distribution: N - TAA (Triebel, Microfungi Exsiccati, 5: no. 111).
Description: Thallus inapparent, not lichenized, the hyphae developing amongst the cells of Polytrichastrum sexangulare-leaflets. Perithecia grey-black to black (paler in lower part), covered with a hyaline layer of cells, pyriform to rarely subglobose, 0.2-0.3 mm across. Exciple dull green, of strongly anastomosing, conglutinate, to 1 μm thick hyphae with narrow lumina; paraphysoids persistent, thread-like, c. 1.5 μm thick, branched and anastomosing in lower part; periphysoids absent; hymenial gel I+ reddish or I+ blue at low concentrations, K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, subcylindrical, short-stalked, thick-walled (c. 2 μm), fissitunicate, the outer gelatinous wall layer I+ blue, with a very faintly I+ blue apical plug. Ascospores 3-septate, hyaline, ellipsoid to long-ellipsoid, 10-15 x 3.5-5.5 μm. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-. UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: an apparently non-lichenised (contact to algal cells not observed so far), arctic-alpine, muscicolous species growing on leaflets of Polytrichastrum sexangulare in the alpine belt, difficult to detect when on the upper side of the dry moss with enrolled leaflets; apparently rare, with some scattered records from the Alps, but probably much overlooked.
