Protothelenella viridis (Rehm) Hafellner

in Nimis & al., MycoKeys, 31: 10, 2018. Basionym: Melanomma viridis Rehm - Hedwigia, 21, 8: 119, 1882
Synonyms: Mycoglaena viridis (Rehm) Riedl; Winteria viridis (Rehm) Sacc.
Distribution:
Description: Thallus inapparent, probably not lichenized, the hyphae developing on decorticated, dead branches of Rhododendron ferrugineum. Perithecia grey-black to black, more or less pyriform, c. 0.3 mm across. Exciple dirty bluish-green, of strongly anastomosing, conglutinate, to 1 μm thick hyphae with narrow lumina; paraphysoids persistent, thread-like, branched and anastomosing in lower part; periphysoids absent; hymenial gel I+ reddish or I+ blue at low concentrations, K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, subcylindrical, short-stalked, thick-walled, fissitunicate, the outer gelatinous wall layer I+ blue, with a very faintly I+ blue apical plug. Ascospores submuriform, with 3-5 tranverse septa and 1 longitudinal septum (which is formed late and is evident only in old spores), hyaline, ellipsoid-oblong, 17-18 x 4-7 μm, with attenuated ends. Photobiont probably absent. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a probably non-lichenised species, apparently closely related to P. anodonta, growing on decorticated, dead branches of Rhododendron ferrugineum in the subalpine belt; only known from the Eastern Alps (Austria); to be looked for in the Italian Alps.
