Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, rimose-areolate, not effigurate, dark blackish-brown, forming up to 5 cm wide patches, the areoles angular, irregular in outline, 0.1-0.3 mm wide, 0.15-0.2 mm thick, mostly flat, the surface granulose-warted, giving the thallus a furfuraceous appearance, attached by a gelatinous basal layer. Thallus anatomy paraplectenchymatous, the hyphal cells c. 3-5 µm wide, arranged in a fan-like way. Apothecia semi-immersed to sessile, 1 per areole, 0.3-0.5(-0.6) mm across, with an initially punctiform, then expanded, black to black-brown, often shiny, slightly concave to flat, sometimes finally rough or umbonate disc, and a persistent thalline margin. Thalline exciple c. 100 µm thick; proper exciple 10-15 µm thick laterally, slightly wider in upper part; epithecium yellowish brown, K+ pale reddish purple, N-; hymenium colourless, 100(-130) µm high, I+ blue; paraphyses thin, septate, branched and anastomosing, the apical cells slightly thickened, c. 3 × 3–5 µm; Asci 8-spored, prototunicate, thin-walled, thickened at apex but without internal amyloid structures. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid, (8-)10-15(-17) x (6-)7-9(-10) µm. Pycnidia immersed, c. 100–125 µm across. Conidia narrowly ellipsoid, 3-4 x c. 1 µm. Photobiont cyanobacterial, chroococcoid, single-celled, the cells arranged in vertical rows and penetrated by haustoria, 8-10(-11) µm wide, surrounded by a 2-2.5 µm thick, yellowish brown gelatinous sheath. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on frequently moistened siliceous rocks, e.g. along streams and lakes; more common in NW Europe, with a few records from the Western Alps. To be looked for in the Italian Alps.
