Verrucaria procopii Servít

Stud. Bot. Čechoslov. 7: 76, 1946
Synonyms:
Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, dark brown to brown-black, 400–700 μm thick, verrucose-areolate, the areoles 0.2-0.4(-0.7) x (0.2-)0.4-0.6(-1) mm, slightly constricted at base, scabrous, the margins and sometimes the upper surface often with subglobose, dark brown, 50-80 μm wide, darker isidia. Cortex 5-30 μm thick, dark-pigmented; algal layer 50-100 μm thick; medulla whitish and paraplectenchymatous in upper part, reddish brown and prosoplectenchymatous in lower part, without a black basal layer. Perithecia rare, half-immersed, 0.3-0.4 mm across, often covered by a thin thalline layer, the ostiole appearing as a paler dot. Involucrellum black, often reaching to base-level; exciple 0.3-0.35 mm across, subglobose, the wall mostly colourless (brown near the ostiole); hamathecium of up to 30-35 μm long periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 19-26 x 9-12 μm. Pycnidia black. Conidia 8-9 x c. 0.5 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: one of the few species of the genus with isidia, apparently widespread in Europe on calciferous rock at low altitudes, but scattered, with a few records from the Eastern Alps (Austria). To be looked for in Italy.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by isidia, or isidia-like structures (e.g. schizidia)
