Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic, pale grey to pale brownish grey, sometimes poorly evident, without a distinct prothallus. Apothecia lecanorine, 0.3-0.7(-1) mm across, numerous and often crowded, adnate, with a flat to slightly convex, dark brown to black, sometimes initially white-pruinose disc and a smooth, finally sometimes excluded thalline margin. Epithecium brown; hymenium colourless, 80-120 μm high; hypothecium colourless, up to 50 high high. Asci 8-spored, narrowly clavate to clavate, the K/I+ blue tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion with parallel or diverging flanks, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-septate, pigmented, ellipsoid to finally narrowly ellipsoid, 21-30 x 8-12 μm, Physcia- or Physconia-type, slightly pointed and paler at both ends, lacking a torus, with type A or B development. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances or with variable amounts of zeorine.
Note: on terricolous mosses and plant debris in open grasslands, over more or less calciferous or otherwise basic to neutral substrata, in sunny, dry, non-eutrophicated situations. Widespread in the Alps, but overlooked, or confused with other species in Italy, where it should be looked for, especially in the dry-warm Alpine valleys.
