Description: Thallus fruticose, greenish or yellowish green, not glossy, consisting of 2-4 cm long, 1-2 mm wide, flattened, sometimes slightly canaliculated, simple or sparingly branched, ridged and foveolate laciniae; pseudocyphellae absent or very scarce. Cortex compact, continuous thick, underlain by longitudinally oriented chondroid strands; medulla white, rather lax. Apothecia lecanorine, subterminal, up to 5-6 mm across, with a yellowish green disc and a raised thalline margin. Asci 8-spored, clavate to subcylindrical, Bacidia-type. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, ellipsoid, straight to slightly curved, 10-14 x 3.5-6 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and medulla K-, C-, KC- or KC+ yellow, P-. Chemistry: cortex with usnic acid.
Note: this is a sibling species to R. tingitana, with which it often occurs together on coastal rocks; the species was never distinguished by Italian authors, and further records may be hidden under those of R. tingitana.
