Distribution: N - VG (Knudsen & al. 2023).
Description: Thallus endo- to chasmolithic, with densely intricate, mostly 2 μm wide hyphae, forming pale curds of hyphae and crystals, the type with associated cyanobacteria. Apothecia lecideine, round, dispersed, broadly attached, not replicating by division, 0.2- 0.8 mm across, with a flat to slightly convex, black but densely pruinose disc which turns red-brown when wet, and a densely white-pruinose, not incised proper margin (dark brown when wet). Proper exciple of radiating, 1-2 μm thick hyphae, the apices unexpanded, reddish-brown, inspersed with (60-)80-120 μm wide crystals; epithecium reddish brown, <10 μm high; hymenium colourless, 120-130(-140) μm high, the hymenial gel K/I+ red; paraphyses coherent, simple to sparingly branched, regularly septate, c. 1 μm thick, the apical cells unexpanded; subhymenium indistinct, c. 20 μm high, K/I+ light blue fading to light red; hypothecium merged with medulla, obscure with crystals, the hyphae 1-2 μm thick. Asci >100-spored, cylindrical-clavate, strongly thickened at apex, the apical dome K/I-, the outer coat K/I+ blue, 90-100 x 10-17 μm, Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid and c. 4 x 3 μm, or ellipsoid and 3-4 x c. 2 μm. Pycnidia not observed. Photobiont chlorococcoid, of a few cells mostly present inside the rock around the apothecia. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a recently described calcicolous species, hitherto known only from the Trieste coast, which surprisingly clusters together with a group of American species (see Knudsen & al. 2023).
