Verrucaria perquisita (Norman) Ertz & Diederich

Mycol. Progr., 3, 3: 231, 2004. Basionym: Coniothele perquisita NormanBot. Notiser: 192 (1868) [1867] - Bot. Notiser 1867: 192, 1868
Synonyms: Trimmatothele perquisita (Norman) Norman ex Zahlbr.
Distribution:
Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic and poorly evident, rarely thinly episubstratic and rimose-areolate, whitish, pale grey to brownish-black. Perithecia black, 0.25-0.5 mm across, 0.2-0.3(-0.4) mm high, initially entirely or 3/4 immersed, later half immersed to almost completely superficial, more or less truncate at apex, sometimes concave around the ostiole. Involucrellum well developed, entirely surrounding the exciple, up to 200 μm thick laterally, slightly thinner (c. 100 μm) around the ostiole, basally reduced, up to 30 μm, entirely carbonized in upper part, distinctly paler in the lower, immersed part; exciple dark blackish brown, paler towards the centre, basally clearly separated from the involucrellum, apically continuous with the involucrellum and indistinguishable from it: hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids measuring up to 30 x 1-2 μm, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ orange-red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 36-64-spored, subcylindrical-clavate, I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, oblong to broadly ellipsoid, (4.5-)5.5-8(-11) x 2.5-3.5(-5.5) μm, without perispore. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a widespread, but poorly collected species ranging from the boreal to the nemoral-subalpine zone with a few scattered records from the Alps, outside Italian territory. To be looked for in Italy. For the generic placement see Ertz & Diederich (2004).
