Description: Thallus foliose, heteromerous, dorsiventral, broad-lobed, forming very large rosettes, 10-20(-30) cm in diam. Lobes (0.5-)1-1.5(-2.5) cm wide, with rounded and ascending, wavy margins, matt, olive-brown to dark bluish green, often warted in thallus center and white-pruinose at lobe tips, with numerous black dots (pycnidia) especially along the margins. Lower surface black-brown in central parts, pale brown at margins, with simple rhizines. Upper cortex paraplectenchymatous, with a pored epicortex, the cell walls containing isolichenan; medulla white; lower cortex paraplectenchymatous. Apothecia common, lecanorine, urceolate, 0.5-2 cm across, sessile to shortly stalked, with a concave to flat, brown disc and a wavy, strongly rugose thalline margin. Epithecium brown; hymenium and hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, very thin-walled, with a K/I+ blue, tall tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, (10-)12-16 x 7-10 µm. Pycnidia common and often very abundant, immersed, appearing as black dots, globose in section, the wall colourless except around ostiole. Conidia colourless, bacilliform, 5-8 x c. 1 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: upper cortex: K-, C-, KC-, P-, N+ violet; medulla: K+ yellow turning red (needle-like crystals), C-, KC-, P+ orange, UV-. Chemistry: medulla with norstictic and connorstictic acids.
Note: a mainly epiphytic species, very abundant in central- to south Italian beech and oak forests, rarer in Mediterranean and Tyrrhenian Italy and in the North, and almost extinct in the Po-Plain; also occurring, with strongly pruinose forms, on calciferous rocks in the high Mediterranean mountains (e.g. in the Madonie Mnts. of Sicily), exceptionally reaching the subalpine belt in the Alps.
