Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic, continuous, white to pale brown. Perithecia black, globose, 0.3-0.7 mm across, completely immersed and leaving pits in the rock. Involucrellum absent; exciple dark throughout, thicker in the region around the ostiole; hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, K/I–, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum. Ascospores strongly muriform, hyaline, ellipsoid, 40-67 x 24-30 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on more or less calcareous rocks in sheltered situations near or above treeline; apparently restricted to the Alps, where it might be more widespread. According to Savić & al. (2008), the species belongs to the Thelidium-clade, not to Polyblastia s.str.
