Polyblastia cupularis A. Massal. f. microcarpa Arnold

Verh. zool.-bot. Ges. Wien, 29: 378, 1879.
Synonyms: Polyblastia microcarpa (Arnold) Lettau
Distribution: N - Ven (Dalla Torre & Sarnthein 1909), TAA (Dalla Torre & Sarnthein 1909, Nascimbene & al. 2022), Lomb (Herb. Nascimbene 1274).
Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic, whitish to pale grey or pale grey brown, continuous, often poorly evident, sometimes delimited by a black prothalline line. Perithecia black, numerous, often arranged in rows, half immersed, forming moderately prominent projections 0.2-0.5 mm across, flask-shaped with a flattened apex, not covered by thallus. Involucrellum present, dimidiate, well-developed, clasping exciple and slightly spreading in lower part; hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent. Asci 8-spored, clavate, K/I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum. Ascospores muriform, with 6-7 oblique transverse septa and 2-3 longitudinal septa, hyaline to finally pale yellow, ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid, (22-)26-36(-50) x (14-)20-25(-30) μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on base-rich or calcareous rocks in sheltered situations near or above treeline; a poorly known taxon, differing only in the smaller perithecia, usually accepted at varietal level (e.g. by Roux & coll. 2014), albeit with an illegitimate name.
