Description: Thallus crustose, mostly endosubstratic, poorly evident and reduced to a few pale yellow granules surrounding the apothecia, without a distinct prothallus, more rarely episubstratic, relatively thick and rimose-areolate, dirty white, pale ochraceous or yellowish-gray. Apothecia sparse, zeorine, 0.3-1 mm across, sessile and slightly constricted at base, with an initially concave, finally slightly convex, orange disc, and a slightly paler, initially thick and raised, finally reduced but persistent, smooth proper margin; a pale yellow thalline rim is sometimes visible at the base of the apothecium. Thalline exciple present only at the base of young apothecia, rich in algal cells; proper exciple up to 200 µm wide, prosoplectenchymatous, thinly corticate and orange in outer part, the medulla colourless, of radiating hyphae; epithecium yellow-brown, c. 10 µm high, K+ red, C-; hymenium colourless, 70-90 µm high; paraphyses simple or forked in upper part, c. 2 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells 4-6 µm wide; hypothecium colourless, prosoplectenchymatous. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, 13-19 x 6-8(-9) µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) (2-)2.5-4 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, or K+ faintly red, C-, KC-, P-; apothecia K+ red C-. Chemistry: apothecia (and thallus, when evident) with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997).Note: a Mediterranean-Atlantic, coastal species growing on horizontal to weakly inclined surfaces of calcareous rocks in sites which are subject to salt-spray; probably more widespread, but certainly not common, in Tyrrhenian Italy.
