Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic to thinly hemiendosubstratic, usually poorly evident, whitish to yellowish-grey, often delimited by thin black lines. Cortex with tightly interwoven, brownish hyphae; lower parts of thallus with large oil cells (up to 60 μm in diam.). Perithecia black, 0.15-0.25 mm across, almost completely immersed in the rock, emerging only with the ostiolar region. Involucrellum absent; exciple brown-black throughout; hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, ellipsoid to clavate, I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of a delicate rostrum. Ascospores 3-septate, hyaline, ellipsoid, 32-36 x 10-14 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: an endolithic amphibian lichen found in periodically submerged situations, mostly on calcareous substrata in upland areas, but usually below the Alpine belt.
