Gyalolechia epiphyta (Lynge) Vondrák
in Vondrák & al., Lichenologist, 48: 180, 2016. Basionym: Caloplaca epiphyta Lynge - Skr. om Svalbard og Ishavet, 506, 81: 119, 1940.
Synonyms: Caloplaca juniperi Poelt & Hinter.; Caloplaca juniperina Tomin; Caloplaca laricina Rondon; Caloplaca xanthostigmoidea auct. non (Räsänen) Zahlbr.; Gyalolechia xanthostigmoidea auct. ital. non (Räsänen) Søchting, Frödén & Arup; Opeltia epiphyta (Lynge) S. Y. Kondr.
Distribution: N - Frl (TSB 35604), Ven (Nascimbene 2005c), TAA (Nascimbene & al. 2004, 2004b, 2022), Lomb (Nascimbene 2006), Piem (Rondon 1964). C- Umb (TSB 30899).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, lemon-yellow to orange-yellow, at first of minute, 0.1-0.2 mm wide areoles/squamules, but soon completely dissolved into blastidia/granules (without true soredia). Apothecia very rare, zeorine, adnate, round to slightly irregular in outline, 0.5-1 mm across, with an orange-yellow, flat to convex disc, and an initially thick, finally often excluded margin. Exciple 15-20 µm wide, corticate, paraplectenchymatous; epithecium brownish orange, coarsely granular, K+ red; hymenium colourless, c. 70 µm high; paraphyses conglutinated, simple or sparingly branched, the apical cells 2.5-3.5 wide; hypothecium colourless, densely inspersed with oil droplets. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, ellipsoid, 14-17 x 6.5-7.5 µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 2.5-3.5 µm, the wall thickened at apex. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K+ red, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: fragilin dominant, with smaller amounts of emodin and parietin.Note: This lichen is widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. It prefers steppes and dry forests in continental regions. It is usually epiphytic or epixylic (often on Juniperus), but it also grows on soil and mosses in rock crevices in arctic-alpine habitats or in steppes. For further details see Vondrák & al. (2016b). Here I also place all records of G. xanthostigmoidea, a mainly boreal lichen known from North America, and sometimes confused with G. epiphyta in Europe.
