Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, thin, usually finely rimose-areolate, yellowish brown, usually darker and greenish around the apothecia, sometimes delimited by a dark prothallus. Apothecia 0.2-0.5 mm across, immersed in the thallus, with a concave, black disc turning green when wet, and a thin, sometimes slightly prominent margin. Epithecium dark bright blue-green, N-, the pigment dissolving in K; hymenium colourless, (50-)70-80(-90) µm high; paraphyses mostly simple or dichotomously branched in upper part, submoniliform in upper part, thicker in upper part, not swollen at apex; hypothecium more or less colourless, 27-34 µm thick. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, the outer wall K/I+ blue, but the inner walls and apical dome K/I-. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid, (7-)9-11(-14) x (5-)7-9 µm, not halonate. Photobiont trentepohlioid, the cells 10-18 µm wide. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on hard, compact, siliceous rocks in moist and rather shaded situations, mostly in upland areas. For the complicated nomenclatural history of this species see the (accepted) proposal by Lutzoni & Brodo (1994).
