Description: Thallus foliose, homoiomerous, gelatinous when wet, deeply and broadly lobed, 3-5 cm wide. Lobes 2-6 mm wide, 100-250(-300) µm thick when wet, often repeatedly branched, broadly canaliculated, rounded at tips, the margins not swollen, coarsely undulate. Upper surface dark olive-green to black, paler and subtransparent when moist, often somehow irregularly pustulate, with dense, laminal, mostly globular, up to 0.3 mm thick isidia-like outgrowths. Lower surface paler, with bundles of white hapters. Upper and lower cortex absent. Apothecia not always present, lecanorine, sessile, 0.5-1.5(-2) mm across, with a flat to convex, red-brown disc and a thick, entire, smooth or pseudoisidiate thalline margin. Thalline exciple ecorticate; proper exciple euparaplectenchymatous; epithecium brownish; hymenium colourless, 85-130 µm high, I+ blue; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched in upper part, 2-3 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells up to 5 µm wide; hypothecium pale yellow. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, the apex strongly thickened, the apical dome K/I+ pale blue, with a downwardly projecting K/I+ deep blue tubular structure. Ascospores submuriform or muriform, most often with 3 transverse septa and 1 longitudinal septum, hyaline, ellipsoid to subglobose, 15-24(-28) x 6.5-13(-15) µm. Pycnidia laminal or marginal, immersed or semi-immersed, paler than thallus. Conidia bacilliform or with slightly swollen ends, 4.5-6 x 1.5 µm. Photobiont cyanobacterial (Nostoc, the cells in long chains). Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances. Note: a widespread holarctic lichen found on calciferous rocks, more rarely on epilithic mosses, in moderately sheltered sites with some water seepage after rain, with a wide altitudinal range; one of the most common species of the genus in Italy.
Growth form: Foliose, broad lobed
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: cyanobacteria, filamentous (e.g. Nostoc, Scytonema)
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by isidia, or isidia-like structures (e.g. schizidia)
On otherwise dry surfaces with short periods of water seepage after rain
