Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, consisting of densely crowded, > 1 mm wide warts which are clearly constricted at base, giving the impression of a subfruticose thallus, the marginal ones sometimes more flattened, slightly elongate and weakly radiating, white to grey-brown, appearing bluish or blackish when overgrown by cyanobacteria. Cortex pseudoparenchymatous, of elongated, anticlinally oriented cells, sometimes overlain by an epinecral layer; medulla white, poorly differentiated from the cortex. Apothecia lecanorine, broadly sessile to half-immersed, but appearing stipitate being usually located in clusters at the top of the thalline warts, 0.5-1.2 mm across, with a red-brown, black-brown or black, concave to strongly convex disc, and a white to grey, rarely finally excluded thalline margin. Thalline exciple corticated, distinctly cellular, rich in algal cells; epithecium reddish brown to orange, with a patchy brown epipsamma; hymenium colourless, 65-85(-95) µm high; paraphyses slightly clavate in upper part, sometimes submoniliform; hypothecium colourless, Asci 8-spored, cylindrical to clavate, with a K/I+ blue tholus and a central non-amyloid area, Bacidia-type. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, broadly to narrowly ellipsoid, 9-14(-16) x 4-6 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances, or with two unidentified terpenes.
Note: on basic siliceous rocks near the coast; the material from Sardinia is somehow different from that from the Atlantic coasts of Europe.
