Description: Thallus crustose, continuous or rimose-areolate, whitish to yellowish grey, without a distinct prothallus. Areoles, when developed, flat or verruculose, ecorticate, epruinose. Apothecia lecanorine, sessile, constricted at base, 0.3--1.3(-2) mm across, with a pale red-brown or orange-brown, flat, epruinose disc and a rather thick, usually persistent, entire or flexuose, smooth to verruculose thalline margin, with or without a parathecial ring. Thalline exciple corticate, with large crystals insoluble in K, pulicaris-type, the cortex (15-)20-25(-30) µm wide laterally, 25-35(-50) µm wide basally; proper exciple colourless, lacking crystals; epithecium colourless to pale orange-brown, with small crystals, <1 μm diam., soluble in K but not in N, penetrating into the hymenium for c. 20 μm, pulicaris-type; hymenium colourless, not inspersed with oil droplets; paraphyses slightly thickened apically, not pigmented; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, very thin-walled, with a K/I+ blue, tall tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid, (9-)11-13(-14.5) x (5-)6-7.5(-8.5) µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecial margin K+ yellow, C-, KC-, P- or P+ pale yellow. Chemistry: atranorin (major), chloroatranorin (minor), roccellic acid (major or absent).Note: on the bark of more or less isolated trees in lowland areas. Apparently common in North America, this species has been recently reported also from Europe, and, at least in the British Isles, it seems to be much more common than L. chlarotera, with which it was often confused. However, the conspecificity of American and European samples is not certain, and the purported differences towards L. chlarotera need to be supported by molecular data and by examination of the types. It is included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Data Deficient” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c).
