Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic or thinly episubstratic, granulose or warted-areolate, pale grey, greenish grey or brownish, the areoles irregular in outline, slightly to strongly convex, contiguous. Cortex poorly developed, filled with minute oil droplets, without granules, the epinecral layer also poorly developed, to 10 µm high. Apothecia lecanorine when young, later turning almost biatorine, round to slightly irregular in outline, sometimes densely crowded, sessile and constricted at base, 0.3-0.7 mm across, with a dark grey, dark brown to brown-black, rarely reddish brown, flat to slightly convex, usually epruinose disc and a paler, weakly prominent, more or less persistent, rarely totally excluded thalline margin. Thalline exciple with algae mostly concentrated at the base, 25-35 µm wide laterally, 25-100 µm wide at base; proper exciple greenish brown or ochre and N+ violet in outer part, colourless to pale brown within, of radiating hyphae; epithecium greenish brown, dark brown, green or almost black, K+ red-violet, without granules; hymenium colourless, 30-60 µm high, without brown granules; paraphyses sparingly branched and anastomosing, 2-2.5 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells dark green, up to 4(-5) µm wide; hypothecium colourless, 40-55 µm high. Asci 8-spored, clavate with an I+ blue tholus containing a I- or I+ much lighter blue, broad and tapering axial body, approaching the Bacidia-type. Ascospores 1-celled (rarely a few 1-septate), hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid, (7-)9-13(-14) x 2.5-4(-5) µm. Micropycnidia rather rare, inconspicuous, immersed, c. 50–80 µm across; microconidia bacilliform to slightly curved, 4.8–5.7 x 0.9-1.1 µm. Mesopycnidia sometimes abundant, immersed, globose, c. 150 µm across, dark brown to bluish green in upper part, hyaline in lower part; mesoconidia tear-drop-shaped, 2.7-3.9 x 1.4-1.8 µm Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus with paraeensic acid D (major), paraensic acid C (minor).
Note: a boreal-montane lichen found on hard lignum, especially on decorticated stumps, more rarely on the acid bark of conifers and of Castanea, mostly in upland areas. For further details see van den Boom & Brand (2008).
