Lecanora paepalea Ach.

Syn. Lich.: 165, 1814.
Synonyms: Lecanora savonensis B. de Lesd.
Distribution: N - Lig.
Description: Thallus crustose, very thin, continuous or finely rimose, whitish, pale grey or very pale brown, mostly indistinct. Apothecia cryptolecanorine, sessile and constricted at base, usually dispersed, 0.2-0.8 mm across, with a reddish brown to finally red brown-black, at first concave, then persistently flat, initially sometimes pruinose disc, and a concolorous, flexuose, entire margin containing algae. Epithecium pale reddish brown, granular, K-; hymenium colourless, 50-60 µm high; paraphyses mostly simple, coherent, thin; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, very thin-walled, with a K/I+ blue, tall tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, oblong-ellipsoid, rounded at apices, 6-9 x 4-6 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a poorly known species of more or less calciferous rocks. An earlier record from Puglia (see Nimis 1993: 360), being dubious, is not accepted here.
