Lecanora paramerae I. Martínez, Aragón & Lumbsch

Lichenologist, 31: 315, 1999.
Synonyms:
Distribution: C - Sar (Zedda 2002).
Description: Thallus crustose, continuous, verruculose, clearly delimited, whitish grey to greenish grey, without a distinct prothallus. Apothecia lecanorine, (1-)1.5-2.5(-3) mm across, usually aggregated, sessile or slightly constricted at base, with a concave to flat, pale to dark brown, epruinose disc and a flexuose, persistent thalline margin. Medulla of thalline exciple gelatinous, 17-35 µm thick, with large irregular crystals soluble in K but insoluble in N, pulicaris-type; proper exciple colourless, without crystals, 10-15 µm thick; epithecium orange-brown, with small crystals (<1 μm diam.) soluble in K but not in N, penetrating into the hymenium for c. 20 μm, pulicaris-type; hymenium colourless, 60-70 µm high; paraphyses sparingly branched and anastomosing, 1-1.5 µm thick, the apical cells up to 3 µm wide. Asci 8-spored, clavate, very thin-walled, with a K/I+ blue, tall tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid, 12-15 x 7.5-10 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ yellow, C-, KC-, P+ yellow-orange. Chemistry: atranorin, 2'-O-methylperlatolic acid, and psoromic acid (major), chloroatranorin, and demethylpsoromic acid (minor).
Note: recently described from continental Spain, this epiphytic species is included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Critically Endangered” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c).
