Description: Thallus crustose, greenish to yellowish grey, dull, poorly developed or granular-warted (appearing sorediate but without true soredia), with ecorticate areoles often coalescing to form a scurfy or rimose crust, often covered with projecting, needle-like terpenoid crystals in the herbarium. Apothecia lecanorine, round or slightly irregular in outline, mostly densely crowded, sessile with a weakly constricted base, 0.3-0.4(-1) mm across, with a yellowish ochre to orange-brown, flat to slightly convex, rarely thinly white-pruinose disc, and a weakly prominent, persistent or finally excluded proper margin. Proper exciple ecorticate, 15-40 µm wide laterally, of loosely entangled hyphae with scattered groups of algae, filled with small brownish granules soluble in K and insoluble in N; epithecium colourless to pale greenish brown, with colourless granules soluble in K and insoluble in N; hymenium colourless to rarely pale yellow, (35-)40-50(-65) µm tall; paraphyses simple or weakly branched and anastomosing, the apical cells hardly swollen, 1-1.5 µm wide, without a brown cap; hypothecium colourless or pale yellow, with granular crystals. Asci 8-spored, clavate, very thin-walled, with a K/I+ blue, tall tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid, (7-)10-13(-16.5) x (3-)3.5-4(-6) µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K- or K+ brownish yellowish, C- or C+ pale yellow, KC- of KC+ dirty yellow, P-, UV+ pale orange. Chemistry: chemotype 1) usnic acid, zeorin and decarboxysquamatic acid, chemotype 2) usnic acid, zeorin and barbatic acid, chemotype 3) usnic acid and zeorin only. Note: a temperate species found on acid bark and lignum, mostly in open woodlands; previously confused with other species and probably more widespread in Tyrrhenian Italy.
