Distribution: N - TAA (Caniglia & al. 2002, Hertel & Schuhwerk 2010, Nascimbene & al. 2022), VA (Piervittori & al. 2004).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, areolate, grey-brown with a slightly reddish tinge, delimited by a dark prothallus. Cortex with a distinct epinecral layer; medulla white, I+ blue-violet. Apothecia lecideine, black, closely adnate, not overtopped by the areoles, with a flat to slightly convex, usually epruinose disc, and a raised, usually persistent proper margin. Proper exciple of parallel-radiating hyphae, green-black in outer part, colourless or very pale brown within; epithecium bright green or olive-green; hymenium colourless, 47-92 μm high; paraphyses conglutinated, usually simple, rarely anastomosing; hypothecium pale brown. Asci 8-spored, clavate, Lecidea-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 9.2-16.2 x 5-7.8 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K+ yellowish, C-, KC-, P+ yellow-orange. Chemistry: thallus with stictic acid.
Note: an arctic-alpine to boreal-montane, perhaps circumpolar silicicolous species found on horizontal surfaces or on pebbles; much rarer in the Alpine belt of the Alps than in Northern Europe; closely related to L. paupercula.
