Distribution: N - TAA, Piem (TSB 32699), Lig (Watson 2014). C - Tosc, Laz, Sar (Knoph & Schmidt 1995, Rizzi & al. 2011). S - Camp (Garofalo & al. 1999), Cal (CLU 12910), Si (Nimis & al. 1996b, Ottonello & Romano 1997, Grillo & Caniglia 2004, Ottonello & al. 2011).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, up to 1.5 mm thick, strongly rimose to areolate-granulose, sulphur yellow, yellowish green to greenish brown. Cortex to 15 µm high, with an epinecral layer; medulla white, filled with crystals, I-. Apothecia lecideine, black, shiny at least when young, strongly constricted at base, 0.5-1.7 mm across, with a flat to convex disc and a usually persistent proper margin (older apothecia may be immarginate). Proper exciple grey-green to brownish-green in outer part, pale brown within, with crystals dissolving in K; epithecium blackish green to bluish green, 10-20 µm high, N+ red; hymenium colourless, not inspersed with oil droplets, with granules dissolving in K, 55-75 µm high, sometimes with crystals in lower part; paraphyses easily made free in K, simple, rarely anastomosing or branched, 1.5-2 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cell to 3.5 µm wide; hypothecium pale reddish brown, sometimes filled with crystals. Asci 8-spored, clavate, with an intensely K/I+ blue tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid, broadly cylindrical axial mass, and a poorly developed ocular chamber, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, approaching the Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 9-17 x 5.5-9 µm, with a thick, smooth wall, not halonate. Pycnidia black, globose. Conidia thread-like, strongly curved, 20-25 x c. 1 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K- or rarely K+ yellow, C+ yellow-orange, KC+ orange, P- or rarely P+ yellow. Chemistry: atranorin, thiophanic acid, thiophaninic acid, and high quantities of other xanthones.Note: the chemistry of L. asema is quite complex: this variety with a yellow thallus is so common in Tyrrhenian Italy, and so easily recognizable, that I still prefer to distinguish it from L. asema s.str., at least at varietal level. It also occurs in dry-warm Alpine valleys.
