Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, areolate to verrucose, up to 1.2 mm thick, white to whitish grey, forming up to 10 cm wide patches. Cortex with a 5-15 µm thick epinecral layer; medulla white, I-. Apothecia lecideine, black, sessile and strongly constricted at base, 0.4-1.3(-1.8) mm across, with a flat to finally convex, epruinose disc, and a thin, glossy, often sinuous proper margin becoming excluded in old apothecia. Proper exciple dark throughout, bluish to greenish black in outer part, reddish brown within, without crystals, up to 100 µm wide laterally; epithecium bright green to blue-green, N+ purple; hymenium colourless or partly pigmented, without crystals, not inspersed with oil droplets, 60-85 µm high; paraphyses easily made free in K, simple, rarely anastomosing or branched, 1.5-2 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells up to 4.5 µm wide; hypothecium yellowish brown to brown in central part, reddish brown laterally. Asci 8-spored, clavate, with an intensely K/I+ blue tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid, broadly cylindrical axial mass, and a poorly developed ocular chamber, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, approaching the Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid to ovoid, 8-17 x 5-9 µm, with a thick, smooth wall, not halonate. Pycnidia globose, with a brown wall. Conidia thread-like, strongly curved, 15-30 µm long. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K+ yellow to rarely K-, C- or very rarely C+ orange, KC- or very rarely KC+ orange, P+ yellow to rarely P-. Chemistry: atranorin, diploicin, plus variable amounts of thuringione, chloratranorin and 4,5-dichlor-3-O-methylnorlichexanthone.
Note: a widespread holarctic lichen with a broad altitudinal and latitudinal range found on base-rich rocks wetted by rain in exposed situations, often starting the life-cycle on other crustose lichens; in the Apennines and in Southern Italy it is not uncommon on the top of calcareous boulders. For the chemistry see Knoph & Leuckert (1997).
