Synonyms:
Distribution: N - TAA (Nascimbene & al. 2014, 2022, Nascimbene 2014, Nascimbene & Marini 2015, Trindade & al. 2021). C - Sar (Zedda 2000b, 2002, 2002c, Zedda & al. 2001).
Description: Thallus leprose, cottony and powdery to granular, thick, whitish green to grey-green, diffuse or weakly delimited, firmly attached to the substratum, the margins delimited, but not forming true lobes (obscure sublobes sometimes present). Medulla present, well developed, white, forming a cottony layer which is sometimes exposed in patches. Hypothallus absent. Photobiont chlorococcoid, the cells 10-12 µm wide. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: usnic acid, zeorin, isousnic acid (traces), triterpenes.
Note: on old trees in humid, but well-lit situations, with optimum in humid Mediterranean forests. The species has been reported also from eastern central Europe, but these records may refer to another lichen (see Bayerovà & Kukwa 2004). It is included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Endangered” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c).
