Lobes flattened, ascending, 3-5 mm wide, smooth, with rounded ends and undulate to crenulate, often ascending margins bearing abundant, thin, transparent hairs, sometimes with granular isidia. Lower surface with sparse white, fasciculate hapters. Upper and lower cortex only partly developed, paraplectenchymatous, formed by 1-3 layers of cells. Apothecia rare, adnate, 0.3-0.7(-1.5) mm across, with a brown, smooth, concave to flat disc and a hairy proper margin. Proper exciple paraplectenchymatous; epithecium brownish; hymenium colourless, 60-90 μm high; paraphyses branched, septate, swollen at apices; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, fissitunicate, the thickened apex with a K/I+ blue ring. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid, (15-)18-22(-26) x (5-)6-7(-9) μm. Pycnidia very rare, semi-immersed. Conidia bacilliform, 9-16 x c. 1 μm. Photobiont cyanobacterial, nostocoid, the individual cells 4-6 µm wide. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a cool-temperate to arctic-alpine lichen found amongst bryophytes on rocks or on soil in open scrublands and grasslands on basic siliceous substrata.
