Lopadium pezizoideum (Ach.) Körb.

Synonyms: Lopadium muscicola (Sommerf.) Körb.; Lopadium pezizoideum var. muscicola (Sommerf.) Th. Fr. p.p.; Sporopodium pezizoideum var. muscicola (Sommerf.) Vain.
Distribution: N - Frl (Tretiach & Hafellner 2000), Ven (Watson 2014), TAA (Nascimbene & al. 2022), Lomb, Piem (Isocrono & al. 2004).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, dark brown, blackish brown or dark green-brown, granulose-warted. Apothecia lecideine, black, 0.7-1.2(-2) mm across, strongly constricted at base to almost substipitate, with a markedly concave to finally flat, sometimes minutely tuberculate disc and a thick, prominent, black (but often brownish in outer part), somehow shiny proper margin. Exciple paraplectenchymatous, of radiating hyphae, dark red-brown in outer part, paler within; epithecium dark brown; hymenium colourless, 120-170 µm high; paraphyses up to 2.5 µm thick in lower part, simple or forked in upper part, the apical cells swollen, 4-7 µm wide, with a dark cap; hypothecium brown-black in upper part, paler in lower part, K-. Asci 1-spored, ellipsoid to clavate-cylindrical, thick-walled, the outer layer K/I+ blue, without a distinct apical dome, with a thin, K/I+ blue zone under the wall. Ascospores strongly muriform, hyaline to very pale brown at maturity, oblong-ellipsoid, 70-135 x 20-46 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a circumboreal-montane lichen found on bryophytes and plant debris over siliceous rocks, with optimum above treeline; probably restricted to the Alps in Italy.
