Description: Thallus foliose, heteromerous, dorsiventral, adpressed throughout or more often somewhat raised at the periphery, forming regular or irregular, up to 5 cm wide rosettes, isidiate. Lobes broadly rounded, contiguous to slightly imbricate, (l-)3-5 mm wide, flat but often with reflexed margins, pale to dark olive-brown, smooth or slightly wrinkled, often shiny, especially at the tips, rarely lightly pruinose, densely covered in flattened, clavate to spathulate, prostrate to suberect, hollow, 0.3-1(-2) mm long, 0.14-0.25 mm thick, glossy, simple or bifurcate isidia originating from cylindrical papillae. Lower surface pale tan to dark brown in central parts, with mostly simple rhizines. Upper cortex paraplectenchymatous, with a non-pored epicortex, the cell walls containing isolichenan; medulla white; lower cortex paraplectenchymatous. Apothecia rare, lecanorine, to 3 mm across, sessile, with a brown disc and a usually not isidiate thalline margin. Epithecium brown; hymenium and hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid, 8-11 x 4-8 µm. Pycnidia usually absent. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, N-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a cool-temperate to boreal-montane, circumpolar lichen found on isolated trees, especially on twigs and sometimes even on conifer needles, in Xanthorion-communities; especially common on twigs of Larix throughout the Alps.
