Description: Thallus crustose, whitish, grey green or pale rusty orange, usually poorly evident and visible only around the apothecia. Apothecia black, sessile, isolated or gathered in small clusters, rounded or angular by mutual compression, 0.3-0.5(-0.7) mm across, with an expanded, flat to convex disc, and a thin, sometimes brown-orange tinged proper margin. Proper exciple well-developed, prosoplectenchymatous, brown, K-, not extending below the hymenium; epithecium brown-green to orange-brown; hymenium pale brown, I-; paraphyses thread-like, sparingly branched and anastomosing, capitate, the apical cells swollen, up to 4 μm wide; hypothecium colourless to pale straw-coloured. Asci elongate-clavate, thickened at apex and with an internal apical beak, K/I-. Ascospores 1-septate, with subequal cells, at first hyaline then pale brown, sole-shaped, sometimes with attenuated apices, 17-21(-28) x 7-10(-12) µm. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on acid bark and lignum; hitherto known only from western Europe, perhaps more widespread, but never common, in Tyrrhenian Italy. It is included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Data Deficient” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c).
