Distribution: N - Frl (Hertel 1969), Ven (Brackel 2016), TAA (Brackel 2016), Lomb (Hertel 1969, Brackel 2016). C - Tosc (Benesperi & al. 2007, Brackel 2016), Laz (TSB 8642), Abr (Nimis & Tretiach 1999, Brackel 2016), Sar (Brackel 2016). S - Si (Brackel 2008c, 2016).
Description: Thallus inapparent, not lichenized, the hyphae developing inside the hymenia of Lecidella-species, especially L. carpathica. Apothecia not evident (distinct ascomatal structures missing), with loosely aggregated asci and paraphysoids embedded in the hymenium of the host, whose apothecia are often slightly discoloured. Paraphysoids 1.5-3 µm thick at mid-level, exceeding the asci in length, the apical cells olivaceous brown, up to 5.5 µm wide; gelatinous matrix formed by asci and paraphysoids I+ red, K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, broadly clavate to subglobose, semi-fissitunicate, with a large, non-amyloid apical dome, a distinct ocular chamber, and K/I+ blue ring-structures in tholus, Arthonia-type. Ascospores (1-)2-3(-4)-septate, not to slightly constricted at central septum, hyaline, ellipsoid to cylindrical-obovoid, (11-)12-17(-20) x (3-)3.5-5(-6) µm, with a thin epispore. Pycnidia immersed in the hymenium of the host, subglobose, 50-80(-90) µm wide, olive brown around the ostiole. Conidia bacilliform, 5-6 x c. 1 µm. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a widespread lichenicolous fungus growing inside the apothecia of saxicolous Lecidella-species, especially L. carpathica; certainly much overlooked and ranging throughout the country,
Growth form: Lichenicolous fungus
