Bih. K. Svenska Vetensk.-Akad. Handl., 3, 18: 83, 1892.
Synonyms: Catillaria contexta (Hedl.) Zahlbr.
Distribution: N - Frl.
Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic, usually inconspicuous and poorly evident. Apothecia micareoid, subglobose and immarginate from the beginning, black, 0.1-0.2(-0.3) mm across. Proper exciple indistinct: epithecium poorly differentiated from the hymenium; hymenium colourless in lower part, dull green and N+ red in upper part, 35-45 μm high, with greenish vertical streaks and variable amounts of purple violet, K+ blue-green granules; paraphyses rather few, of two types: a) less than 1 μm wide, hyaline, sometimes branched and anastomosing, and, b) 1.5-2 μm wide, the apices widening to 3 μm, usually simple, pigmented and arranged in vertical streaks; hypothecium dark purple-green, K+ intensifying green. Asci 8-spored, clavate to cylindrical-clavate, with an unstained wall and a K/I+ blue outer layer and apical dome, the latter with a non-amyloid, cylindrical axial mass. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, oblong to ovoid, 7-12(-14) x 3-4.6 μm. Pycnidia black, immersed to sessile, the wall greenish, K- or K+ intensifying green, N+ purple-red, producing either oblong mesoconidia measuring 3.5-4.5 x 1.5-2 μm or bacilliform microconidia measuring 4-5 x 0.5-1 μm. Photobiont micareoid, the cells 5-7 μm wide. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: thallus and apothecia without lichen substances. Note: mostly on wood in sheltered situations, such as in montane to subalpine woodlands; reported from the mountains of Friuli, but perhaps more widespread in the Alps.
